What is JEE?
Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) is a national-level engineering entrance examination conducted for admission to various engineering colleges in India. It is conducted in two phases: JEE Main and JEE Advanced. JEE Main serves as a qualifying exam for JEE Advanced and is also used for admission to NITs, IIITs, and CFTIs.
Purpose & Scope
To select the most deserving candidates for undergraduate engineering programs at premier institutions including IITs, NITs, IIITs, and other centrally funded technical institutions.
National level examination recognized by all engineering colleges across India. JEE Advanced qualified students can get admission into 23 IITs.
Recognition & Prestige
Recognized as one of the toughest undergraduate entrance exams globally, with acceptance rates below 1% for IITs.
Eligibility Criteria

Educational Qualification
Candidates must have passed 10+2 or equivalent examination with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics as compulsory subjects.
Age Limit
No age limit for JEE Main. For JEE Advanced, candidates should have been born on or after October 1, 2001 (5-year relaxation for SC/ST/PwD).
Number of Attempts
JEE Main: 3 consecutive years. JEE Advanced: Maximum 2 attempts in consecutive years.
Nationality
Indian nationals, NRIs, PIOs, OCIs, and foreign nationals are eligible.
Additional Requirements
- •Minimum 75% aggregate marks in Class 12 (65% for SC/ST) OR be in top 20 percentile of respective board. Note: This criteria has been relaxed for 2026.
- •Candidates appearing for Class 12 exam in 2026 are also eligible.
- •For IITs, candidates must qualify JEE Advanced and meet the category-wise rank cutoffs.

JEE Main is the first stage and is conducted by NTA. It qualifies you for JEE Advanced and is used for admission to NITs, IIITs, and CFTIs. JEE Advanced is the second stage conducted by IITs and is required for admission to IITs.
