What is NEET?

National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) is the sole entrance examination for admission to undergraduate medical (MBBS), dental (BDS), AYUSH (BAMS, BHMS, BUMS), and veterinary courses in government and private colleges across India. It is also the qualifying exam for those aspiring to pursue medical education abroad.

Purpose & Scope

To create a single-window entrance examination for all medical UG admissions, ensuring fair and transparent selection of candidates based on merit.

All India level examination accepted by all medical colleges including AIIMS, JIPMER, and all state government/private medical colleges.

Recognition & Prestige

Largest undergraduate medical entrance exam in the world with over 20 lakh candidates appearing annually.

Eligibility Criteria

Make sure you meet all the requirements before applying

Educational Qualification

Candidates must have passed/appearing in 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Biotechnology, and English as core subjects.

Age Limit

Minimum 17 years as of December 31 of admission year. No upper age limit (as per current rules).

Number of Attempts

No limit on number of attempts.

Nationality

Indian Nationals, NRIs, OCIs, PIOs, and Foreign Nationals are eligible.

Additional Requirements

  • •General category: Minimum 50% aggregate in PCB (Physics, Chemistry, Biology).
  • •SC/ST/OBC: Minimum 40% aggregate in PCB.
  • •General-PwD: Minimum 45% aggregate in PCB.
  • •Qualifying marks are required in each subject individually.
  • •There is no upper age limit for NEET 2026.

Find answers to common questions about the examination

Yes, there is no restriction on the number of attempts or year gaps for NEET. You can appear for NEET even after multiple years of completing Class 12.

Yes, since 2020, admission to all AIIMS and JIPMER is also through NEET scores only. Separate entrance exams for these institutes have been discontinued.

For government colleges, you typically need 550+ marks out of 720 for the general category. Cutoff varies by state and category.

With 400 marks, getting government MBBS seat is difficult. You may get private college admission or consider BDS, BAMS, BHMS, or BUMS courses.

For Biology, NCERT is sufficient. For Physics and Chemistry, you need additional reference books like HC Verma and OP Tandon along with NCERT.
